Frequently Asked Questions
Tiles slip when the nibs that hook them onto the battens break off, when the nails corrode and fail, or when battens rot and can no longer hold fixings. On older roofs it is common for several tiles in the same area to slip at once because the battens were all laid at the same time and age together.
Safe access depends on roof pitch, height and the number of tiles involved. For isolated tiles at low level, a properly footed ladder may be sufficient. For larger sections, or any roof where working at height creates a fall risk, we erect scaffolding — this protects both our team and the property below.
If the ridge mortar is cracked, hollow or showing signs of movement, yes — it makes sense to address it while the surrounding tiles are already stripped back and access is set up. Leaving failing ridge mortar in place risks water entering the ridge course, which undermines the tile repair work beneath.
Undamaged tiles in good condition can be cleaned and relaid. We assess each tile when it comes off — chips, cracks or surface spalling mean replacement. Mixing old and new tiles on the same roof is normal; any colour difference tends to blend over time as weathering takes effect.
